Fainting   Boy, this lady went through something even before marrying POW and I can only imagine how used she felt after his continued dalliances, post nuptials.  I did not follow her life at all, so this is fascinating stuff to me and I am surprised that she only suffered with a few problems! WOW!  The upper class men have a real sense of entitlement and certainly used that power over the women who bring so little to the table as in the way that earl treated his wife.  I'm not sure what this male only inheritance thingy is but if a woman did inherit then after she married and had a son the family wealth would indeed change hands so this maybe why each son has to produce a son.

John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, had no living male heirs, by his wife Sarah Spencer, so his daughter inherited the title.

Diana has a very interesting family history.

The daughters of the Duke stand in the place of sons, and are treated exactly like sons. In fact, Henrietta's only son predeceased her. But by the terms of the Act, the title did not pass to her eldest surviving daughter. Instead, it passed to the eldest son of her sister, Anne, Lady Sunderland (Anne having also predeceased Henrietta). It has been in the direct male line ever since, passing from father to son
